History:
Curious about the history of Ermenegildo Zegna? The history of the clothing company Ermenegildo Zegna dates back to the turn of the 20th century. In 1910, 22-year-old Ermenegildo Zegna opened a wool mill in the Italian town of Trivero, at the base of the Alps. Zegna’s goal was to produce the best men’s suits by using the best wool he could find. Since its humble beginnings, the company has grown by leaps and bounds. In the 21st century, it produces some of the most recognized suits in the world.
By the 1930s, Zegna’s company had over 1,000 employees. The company was a blessing to the village of Trivero, as it brought jobs and money to the isolated town. In the late 1930s, the company expanded and began to export its fabrics to the United States. In the 1940s, Ermenegildo’s two sons, Angelo and Aldo, began working with their father. Following Ermenegildo’s death in 1966, the pair took over and began to vertically integrate the company. By the end of the 1960s, Ermenegildo Zegna began to produce ready-to-wear men’s clothing and had continued to expand into the international market.
In the 1980s, the company opened several boutiques, where it sold its line of suits as well as a sportswear line. The first boutique opened in Paris in 1980. A second one followed in Milan in 1985. As of 2003, the company had over 300 boutiques all around the world.
At the turn of the 21st century, Ermenegildo Zegna started acquiring other high-end fashion companies, such as the Guida fashion house. The 21st century also saw the company make inroads into the men’s fragrance and accessories departments. Zegna’s first fragrance, Essenza Di Zegna, was produced by YSL Beaute in 2003. As of 2010, the company remains operated by the Zegna family. Aldo Zegna passed away in the year 2000, but his brother Angelo remains as chairman of the Group.
